Get Going at Gobblerfest: How to Navigate Virginia Tech's Biggest Organizational Event

What is Gobblerfest?:

It’s that time of year again! Gobblerfest is one of Virginia Tech’s most exciting events; a day when organizations and clubs come together on the Drillfield to introduce themselves to new and returning students. It’s an opportunity for organizations to gain new members and for students to explore their hobbies and interests-- and to make some new friends! This year, Gobblerfest will be held Saturday, September 4th, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm, on the Drillfield.

Gobblerfest can be overwhelming at first, but, there’s no need to stress! We’re going to walk you through how to make the most of your Gobblerfest experience this year.

How to Prepare

Before Gobblerfest, do your research on the event. See which student organizations are coming to the event here and look into the organizations you’re interested in on Gobblerconnect. Additionally, you can check out the organizations on Facebook-- they likely have an organizational Facebook page where they post updates and events.

For reference during the event, download or print out the Gobblerfest map and mark the sections you want to visit. Pack a water bottle and a snack, since this event lasts a few hours, and it will be hot! Food and drinks will not be available at the event. And, take a folder or a bag with you to hold the flyers, cards, and other merchandise items you may pick up at the event. These materials usually have information about how to stay in touch with the organization and join their activities.

How to Navigate

It’s time for Gobblerfest, and since you’ve been planning your trip, you are ready to go! Use your map to help you navigate the event, or pick a corner and work your way out from there if you are unsure of where you would like to start. If you want to know where to find a specific organization, volunteers will be stationed at tents around the event, who will be happy to point you in the right direction. All locations are finalized the day of the event, so you won’t be able to pinpoint where you will need to go until you arrive.

Take the time to stop and introduce yourself to the organizations you’d like to join!

If you find yourself at a loss for words, a few ways you can introduce yourself are …

  • Hi, can I ask you about what your organization does?

  • Can I learn more about how your organization does [insert topic here]?

  • Hi, my name is [your name], and I would like to be a part of your organization! Can you tell me about how I can join?

Make sure to make eye contact, smile, and ask any questions you may have up front when talking with organizations at the event. It’s better to know more information before you commit to joining!

You can ask about…

  • Expected commitment in hours per week

  • Regular meeting times

  • Expected activities

  • Events and trips

  • Leadership team composition and opportunities

  • Meeting places

  • Paying dues

  • Why they enjoy being a part of the organization!

While talking with organizations, ask for permission to join any group chats, discussion boards, or email lists in order to keep up to date with the organization’s activities.

What Next?

After having fun at Gobblerfest, take some time to put important upcoming meetings or activities on your calendar. Be sure to attend as many of these events as you can to demonstrate your interest and mingle with other members. With the organization's permission, join any group chats or email lists to keep an eye on incoming information about club activities, interest meetings, paying dues, and more. If you already have information about dues, pay any necessary fees as soon as possible via the means preferred by the organization.

Gobblerfest is a great opportunity to dive deeper into your interests, build on certain skills, and make new connections. You never know what you might find, so keep an open mind and come prepared!
